The idea of voting for Mitt Romney has been a quandary for me. While he is to the right of Obama, he still has a lot of liberal viewpoints going for himself. Romneycare comes to mind right up front. But, his politics haven't been my real concern. It's his religion.
OK, I know. We can get into that whole "separation of church and state" discussion. Romney has made no moves to even indicate that he will preside as President over a newly contrived Mormon theocracy. Nor has he given his religion plenty of air play. In fact, he goes to some length to keep his religion out of the conversation entirely. That is a problem in itself. What? Is he ashamed of his religion or does he just know that too many people believe it is not "Christian" and therefore a sect or cult? Mormonism speaks of Jesus but He doesn't have the priority in their teachings that Joseph Smith has or even what their latest "Prophet" has. So, what to do.
Politically speaking, Romney doesn't thrill me anymore than Obama does. When one has lived as long as I have they've heard it all before. There really is nothing new under the sun. Promises made become promises broken with a caveat soon after the Oath of Office is administered. Elections have become more about "anyone but _____" then a real effort to do what's best for all American people. So, there is that. And, "that" gets me to the bottom-line.
Holding his religion against him as a reason not to vote for Romney seems just petty to me now. So what if he believes he will one day be "a god". That doesn't mean he will be. And, so what if he believes that God was once just like Him and grew up to be God. Doesn't make it so. And, yet it is Romney who will have to face God Himself with those claims, not me. He already knows that if he even lets his religion seep into the Political Arena just a tad, he will get called on it and that will take away precious time in defense that could better be spent getting his policies past Congress.
And then there is the "Solomon test" that I just made up. If anyone could have been the perfect Ruler/King/President, it would have been Solomon. Yet, after he pondered the vicissitudes of life and came to a ho-hum conclusion, he turned his back to God and his face to idolatrous women and the worshiping of false gods. That from a man who had Wisdom galore and knew better! The problem was, he was still just a man. A man with a fallen nature whose sins were covered yet not taken away. He was foible and prone to vanity and he took more than one wrong turn in his life. Yet, God had chosen him with full knowledge.
Romney is no Solomon and whether or not God has chosen him to lead this Nation in it's last hours only He knows. But, if I'm to vote, then I will have to vote for Romney. Obama is nothing more than a destructive force blazing a broad swath of socialized just about everything across America. While Romney is pretty much the other side of the same coin, he, at least, will slow the destruction down giving time for a breather. And, when it's all said and done, the True Ruler of mankind will wrap it up.
